Jesus goes up on the mountain of the Lord, called Zion, and gives the teachings that were promised by the prophet Isaiah. It’s more than a little spectacular. The teachings—the “blessed are the” statements—are a lot like the “peace, shalom” declarations of Isaiah. Jesus proclaims that the lowly, all those without many resources who are considered the opposite of the blessed by the world, are indeed blessed by God. This is preaching, teaching, and poetry all rolled into one.
