Zacchaeus was a tax collector in Jericho, and because tax collectors worked with the Romans and often overcharged people, they were excluded by the community. When Jesus came to Jericho, he asked to stay at Zacchaeus’ house. Zacchaeus was so overwhelmed he promised to give half of his possessions to the poor, and to repay fourfold anyone he cheated. Because Jesus welcomed him, Zacchaeus—who was once disdained by society—was reintegrated into the community.
