Paul is taking a classic text in the Old Testament narrative (Genesis 15; 17) and reinterpreting it. He is writing to believers about Abraham’s faith and God’s promise to Abraham. Abraham is righteous because of his faith — not because he followed certain rules.

This is true for us too. It is our faith in Jesus that makes us right with God.
