After reconciling with Esau, Jacob settled in Bethel and had twelve sons. Jacob gave his youngest and favorite son Joseph a fancy coat, which made Jacob’s older sons jealous. The situation worsened when Joseph had two dreams foretelling his brothers would bow down to him. It was unheard-of for an older brother to yield to a younger brother, because in that culture, power and inheritance belonged to the firstborn. So, Joseph’s brothers threw him into a pit. Eventually, they sold him to some traders who were heading for Egypt.
