When these verses in Isaiah were written, the temple in Jerusalem had been destroyed and God’s people were in exile. This passage offers a surprise gift: the renewal of the covenant in a time of despair. The language used here is that of the marketplace, and surprisingly, this salesperson is offering something at no cost! God is restoring the covenant—providing a new temple and home for God’s people—for free! God provides for Israel. Even when people are struggling, even if they turn away from God, God still provides.
