This story of a wild Pentecost is the story of the church of Christ being born. Jesus’ followers, friends, and disciples have been waiting in Jerusalem, as their risen rabbi instructed just before he disappeared from their sight on the Mount of Olives. Now they are gathered together in a house and God’s Holy Spirit shows up. The miracle of this Pentecost is a miracle of hearing, as the Jewish faithful from every corner of the world—gathered in the Holy City for the holiday—hear news of Jesus in their own languages. The gospel is breaking into the world as it always will, on the lips and tongues of those empowered by the Holy Spirit to be witnesses—to tell what they’ve seen and heard, and what they know.
