Jeremiah uses the images of a shrub in the desert and a tree planted by water to describe two different types of relationships with God. When we trust only in human abilities and focus solely on our own needs and wants, we are cut off from God like a shrub is cut off from water in the wilderness. Conversely, when we trust in the Lord, we foster strong relationships, we act with kindness and love, and life becomes more fulfilling. We feel like well-watered trees! This text asks, will you trust in yourself or will you put your trust in the Lord?
